Utopai Studios and DeNA Co., Ltd. unveiled a partnership to integrate artificial intelligence into experimental animation workflows in Japan. According to Utopai Studios, the Entertainment Development Business Unit of Tokyo-listed mobile gaming and e-commerce firm DeNA will incorporate Utopai’s storytelling AI system, PAI, to assist with early-stage visual concepts and production efficiency.
Integrating PAI into Japanese Animation Workflows
Under the arrangement announced, a team of production specialists from Utopai Studios will work alongside DeNA’s creative staff. According to Utopai Studios, the AI tool will contribute to early visual concepts, character and environment design, scene planning, and the iterative production process. Minabe Naoki, head of DeNA’s Entertainment Development Business Unit, stated that the collaboration aims to explore how AI can help create an environment where creators can focus on their craft while making production workflows more efficient. DeNA artists maintain authority over the story, visual style, performances, and tone, retaining final sign-off on every creative decision, according to project disclosures.
Technical Architecture and Regional Deployment
Unlike generative tools that produce isolated clips, PAI is built to maintain project continuity across multiple shots, scenes, and episodes, according to Utopai Studios. Once a character, background, or design element receives approval, the system’s agent-first architecture carries that asset forward into subsequent scenes without rebuilding it. Cecilia Shen, CEO and co-founder of Utopai Studios, stated that integrating PAI into a Japanese production workflow combines new production capabilities with traditional artistry, judgment, and authorship. DeNA stated that the initiative is separate from other animation productions currently underway at the company, with PAI initially confined to an evaluation phase governed by jointly negotiated rules on permissions, intellectual property, and security.
Global Expansion of Utopai’s PAI System
The partnership in Japan follows prior deployments of Utopai’s technology in other international markets. According to Utopai Studios, Huace Film & TV in China has already integrated the PAI system into its long-form content pipeline for the animated series Journey to the West: The Lost Five Hundred Years. Additionally, Utopai reported that the tool is running on film and television projects in the United States, as well as international co-productions spanning Europe, North America, and Asia.
