According to eyewitnesses and attendee accounts, the rock band performed from the balcony of Bewley’s Café, utilizing large speakers that drew immediate crowds as the music began.

The impromptu gig brought parts of Grafton Street to a standstill as crowds gathered outside Bewley’s Café on Friday afternoon. Hugh Maguire, who happened upon the area, noted the confusion among onlookers before the performance was identified. “U2 are performing to mark their 50th anniversary,” he said of the event, deciding against staying due to the swelling audience. Charlie O’Neill, a 69-year-old street photographer living in Santry, recalled seeing the band play at the very first concert to take place at Slane Castle alongside Thin Lizzy, expressing pride in their longevity and international success.
Fan Travel and International Turnout
The anniversary celebration attracted dedicated followers from around the world who made the trip to Dublin for the weekend. Tilles Tijmes, a Dutch member of the Flanders U2 fan club living in Denmark, booked accommodation immediately upon learning of the milestone. Craig Molloy and his wife Stacey traveled from Derbyshire, England, continuing a personal tradition connected to the band after Molloy proposed during their 2017 concert at the 3Arena. Todd and Lara Garrison-Gebhart flew from Michigan in the United States, having followed the group since the early 1980s.
Logistical Disruption and Local Impact
The dense crowds created significant movement challenges around the lower end of Grafton Street and South Anne Street, where delivery riders struggled to access local eateries such as Xi’an Street Food. Security personnel attempted to maintain narrow pathways through the bottleneck, while parents pushed through the heavy foot traffic. Amid the disruptions, long-time attendees like Emer Bolger, who traveled from Co Carlow with her son Senan, secured viewpoints near the venue. Bolger, an avid follower since 1985, noted that she has attended nearly every tour since 1987.
