Indian mixed martial arts athlete Suchika Tariyal won a bronze medal at the Asian Games 2026 in Nagoya, Japan, securing a historic podium finish as the sport made its continental debut.
Historic Asian Games Debut in Nagoya
Mixed martial arts made its official debut as a combat sport at the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games, marking a major milestone for regional competition. Suchika Tariyal became the first Indian to compete in the discipline at the games. Because the tournament format awards medals to both losing semi-finalists without separate bronze-medal playoffs, Suchika advanced to the podium despite a hard-fought defeat.
She had previously secured her medal position on Sunday by defeating Mongolia’s Altanchimeg Baigalmaa 2-0 in the quarter-finals.
Extensive Background in Combat Sports
Suchika brings a deep multi-disciplinary combat sports background to professional mixed martial arts. She is an eight-time national judo champion and won a gold medal at the 2019 Commonwealth Judo Championships, alongside competing in the women’s 57kg judo event at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
After making her MMA debut in 2017, Suchika took a seven-year break from the sport while continuing to compete in judo and ju-jitsu before returning to professional MMA in 2024.
Weigh-In Challenges for the Indian Team
India entered two representatives in mixed martial arts at the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 games. However, Varun Sanyal, who was entered in the men’s traditional 77kg event, was declared medically unfit prior to his quarter-final bout, ending his tournament run without a fight.
The symptoms occurred while he was restricting food and fluids approximately 30 minutes after using a sauna, leading a tournament doctor to rule him unfit to compete.
