Mario Lemieux Sells Minority Stake in Pittsburgh Penguins

The transaction ends Lemieux’s uninterrupted formal ownership connection to the franchise that began when he rescued the organization from bankruptcy in 1999, though the new ownership group has expressed a strong desire to keep the franchise legend involved in a non-ownership capacity.

The Evolution of Penguins Ownership From FSG to Hoffmann

The complete buyout of Lemieux’s and Burkle’s remaining shares concluded alongside the $1.75 billion sale of the franchise from Fenway Sports Group (FSG) to the Hoffmann Family of Companies earlier in 2026, according to sources cited by DK Pittsburgh Sports and the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. When Lemieux and Burkle sold a controlling interest in the team to FSG for approximately $900 million in 2021, both retained smaller shares in the organization. While FSG maintained a minority stake following the subsequent sale to the Hoffmann family, Lemieux and Burkle saw their remaining shares reduced to zero.

According to DK Pittsburgh Sports, Lemieux, 60, had assembled a separate investor group aiming to repurchase the franchise from FSG, but FSG ultimately selected the Hoffmann Family of Companies to take over majority control. Despite the bidding outcome, sources confirmed that Lemieux’s decision to part with his remaining shares was not born of friction with the incoming buyers; rather, he realized a substantial financial return on his stake after the team’s valuation nearly doubled in less than five years.

Geoff Hoffmann on Future Role for Mario Lemieux

For the first time since the Penguins drafted him No. 1 overall in the 1984 NHL Draft, Lemieux holds no formal equity or governance title with the franchise. However, new Penguins governor Geoff Hoffmann made it clear during his introductory press conference at PPG Paints Arena that the franchise icon’s door remains wide open.

“Mario and I have spent some time together. He’s been as good as advertised. Just a great, great guy,” Hoffmann said in June, as reported by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “I’m really hopeful that he will be a part of this in whatever way, shape or form makes sense for him. But we would love for him to be a part of it. We know what he means to the Penguins, what he means to the city and what he means to the NHL.”

Hoffmann and Lemieux spent considerable time together in the owner’s suite at PPG Paints Arena throughout the latter half of the regular season and the Stanley Cup playoffs. Sources indicate that Lemieux’s future presence might take the form of maintaining his private suite for family, friends, and team functions, as Lemieux stated multiple times that he welcomes the opportunity to remain a visible figure around the organization regardless of his ownership status.

Two Decades of Stewardship in Pittsburgh

The conclusion of Lemieux’s ownership tenure marks the end of a transformative era for hockey in western Pennsylvania. After a Hall of Fame playing career that brought two Stanley Cups to Pittsburgh in 1991 and 1992, Lemieux led a consortium that purchased the franchise out of Chapter 11 bankruptcy in November 1999, effectively keeping the team in Pittsburgh.

Over more than two decades as an owner alongside Burkle, Lemieux presided over three additional Stanley Cup championships in 2009, 2016, and 2017, cementing the franchise’s status as a modern NHL powerhouse and securing a state-of-the-art arena in downtown Pittsburgh.
