Italian defender Cristian Barba has completed a permanent transfer to Serie B club Palermo, returning to his home country following a stint in Indonesia where he helped Persib Bandung claim the Super League title last season. The 33-year-old center-back secured the move to the Sicilian club drawn by its historic stature in Italian football and the opportunity to play under former international striker Filippo Inzaghi.
Palermo Transfer and Filippo Inzaghi Influence
Barba stated that joining Palermo proved to be a straightforward choice given the club’s prominent history in the Italian game. In an interview with GOAL, he pointed directly to the presence of manager Filippo Inzaghi as a decisive factor in his decision to sign with the Serie B side. “Palermo is a historic club in Italy,” Barba told GOAL. “You could say its history speaks for itself, a fantastic history. Obviously, this is a very easy decision. Certainly also the coach factor, whom I know well and I know his quality. That heavily influenced my decision.” Despite relocating to Italy, Barba noted that he maintains regular contact with his former manager at Persib, Bojan Hodak, highlighting similarities in their managerial styles.
Comparing Indonesian Fan Culture to Italian Derbies
Reflecting on his time in Indonesian football, Barba described the intense atmosphere generated by supporters, specifically Persib’s fan base known as Bobotoh. He likened the fierce local rivalries and passion to the high-stakes environment of Italian fixtures such as the Rome derby between AS Roma and Lazio. “In Indonesia, there is an extraordinary passion for football,” Barba said, as reported by GOAL. “People live with it. They wake up in the morning and only think about that and you can absorb it, from our side you can feel it clearly from the pitch.” When discussing fixtures against Persija Jakarta, he acknowledged the emotional weight of the matches, comparing the overall intensity to the Derby della Capitale while noting the unique, life-or-death atmosphere surrounding the fixture.
Farewell Message to Persib Supporters
Closing his remarks on his departure from Indonesian football, Barba sent an emotional message of gratitude to the Bobotoh for their support during his championship-winning campaign. He emphasized that the club’s supporters treated him as part of their community throughout his tenure. “I want to thank all the fans and all the Bobotoh, that’s what they call themselves,” Barba told GOAL. “And I want to thank them once again because they are fantastic, even now I still feel their closeness. I want to send a warm hug to everyone, and clearly wish them the best for the future because they have treated me like one of them, and they deserve the best.”
