Climate Adaptation Week in Saarbrücken: Events and Activities

Saarbrücken is hosting a guided climate walk on Tuesday, September 15, to show residents how global temperature changes directly impact local neighborhoods, according to the state capital administration and the Tourismus Zentrale Saarland.

Saarbrücken Climate Walk Details and Route

The roughly two-hour walking tour begins at 5:00 p.m. at Schillerplatz, led by municipal climate adaptation manager Jan-Hendrik Jochens. According to city organizers, the tour highlights visible climate impacts across densely built urban areas, focusing specifically on urban heat islands, shade management, local greening initiatives, rainwater infiltration, and heavy rainfall precautions. The initiative forms part of a broader municipal effort to educate citizens on everyday vulnerabilities and localized adaptation strategies. Registration and additional details are available through the Tourismus Zentrale Saarland.

Interactive Climate Fresk Workshop in Saarbrücken

Complementing the outdoor walk, an interactive workshop titled “Climate Fresk” takes place on Friday, September 18, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Saarbrücken City Library. Conducted by the association Climate Fresk e.V., the session invites participants to build an interconnected visual puzzle using scientific cards detailing the causes and consequences of environmental shifts. According to event organizers, the collaborative card game illustrates how human activities directly influence climate variations and subsequent regional impacts. Participants can find registration guidelines on the Climate Fresk official portal.

National Climate Adaptation Week Context

Both local events coincide with Germany’s fifth annual Climate Adaptation Week, running from Monday, September 14, to Sunday, September 20. Operating under the national motto “#GemeinsamFürKlimaanpassung” (Together for Climate Adaptation), municipalities, social organizations, and regional associations are showcasing practical local precautions. According to the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV), the nationwide action week is coordinated by the Center for Climate Adaptation (Zentrum KlimaAnpassung).
