The Canadian men’s volleyball team advanced to the final of the NORCECA continental Olympic qualification tournament after defeating Mexico in straight sets on Friday in Moncton, New Brunswick.
Canada Dominates Mexico in Straight Sets
Canada controlled the match across all major statistical categories. According to match statistics cited by local outlets, the Canadian squad recorded 42 attacking points compared to Mexico’s 31, secured eight blocks while holding Mexico to zero, and tallied eight service aces against two for the Mexican side. Despite a shaky start that saw Mexico take an early 12-8 lead in the opening set after Canada initially went up 4-1, the team recovered through disciplined play.
Head coach Dan Lewis acknowledged the early pressure in comments reported by journalists on site, stating that the team knew how to navigate difficult moments through discipline. Captain and top scorer Éric Loeppky noted that the squad expected Mexico to come out fighting hard, adding that the players remained calm to elevate their level of execution throughout the match.
Road to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics
With this victory, Canada stands just one win away from securing a berth at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Only one Olympic quota spot is available at the Moncton tournament. To claim it, the Canadian team must defeat Cuba in Saturday’s final. Cuba punched its ticket to the championship match by defeating the Dominican Republic in three close sets on Friday, with scores of 32-30, 25-19, and 25-15.
The stakes are high for a program that has represented the country at the last three Olympic Games, following a five-edition absence between 1996 and 2012. Loeppky expressed confidence in his teammates’ unity during tough stretches, while Coach Lewis emphasized physical recovery and focus ahead of the decisive clash against Cuba.
