Millions Face Strict Eligibility Rules Under New Medicare Weight-Loss Drug Program
Millions of Medicare beneficiaries may qualify for a new federal initiative granting access to specific weight-loss medications for a flat $50 monthly copayment, though strict clinical and coverage criteria will exclude many applicants, NewsNation reported. Established by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, the temporary Medicare GLP-1 Bridge program runs through Dec. 31, 2027.
Program Rules and Coverage Limitations Through 2027
To participate in the demonstration, beneficiaries must be enrolled in a qualifying Medicare Part D prescription drug plan. Certain special Medicare coverage arrangements are excluded from the program entirely. Beneficiaries who already receive a covered GLP-1 medication through their standard Medicare drug coverage are ineligible and must continue obtaining their prescriptions through their existing plans, according to Medicare.gov.
Medical history also dictates eligibility. Since standard Medicare Part D plans already provide coverage for GLP-1 medications to treat Type 2 diabetes, fatty liver disease, or moderate to severe sleep apnea, individuals with these diagnoses are generally excluded from the Bridge program. To qualify, adults typically need a body mass index of at least 35, or a lower BMI paired with health issues such as chronic kidney disease, prediabetes, uncontrolled high blood pressure, peripheral artery disease, a stroke, or a previous heart attack. According to the National Council on Aging, the temporary initiative covers Foundayo, Wegovy, and Zepbound KwikPen products.
The American Association of Clinical Endocrinology notes that obesity is a chronic disease requiring long-term treatment to achieve meaningful health outcomes, warning that interruptions in therapy can negatively affect disease management, patient adherence, and continuity of care.
Providers may submit prior authorization requests beginning July 1, 2026, as requests will not be accepted or processed before that date, according to the American Association of Clinical Endocrinology. The group remains committed to pushing for a permanent policy that would provide Medicare enrollees with ongoing access to GLP-1 treatments after the 18-month test phase concludes.
